1. Know that you are having anxiety.
It's important that when you are having anxiety, you are able to recognize that it's anxiety. Knowing when you are having anxiety will help you know what you need to do next. If you can't recognize what your anxiety feels like and what it is while it's happening, you won't be able to fix it right away. When you are feeling anxiety, you need to accept that you are having anxiety so you can move on to bettering your mood. If you try to tell yourself that aren't having anxiety it can only extend the amount of time your anxiety will last.
2. Understand that the anxiety will not last forever
When you feel that you are having anxiety one of the most important things to do is remember that you will not feel this way forever. No matter how terrible you feel at the moment, remember that the feelings will be gone soon. If you are having anxiety and all you are thinking about is how terrible you feel and that it's never going to go away, you're going to make the anxiety even worse. Calmly tell yourself that this anxiety is going to pass and you are going to feel better.
3. Remove yourself from the situation
There is a reason you are having feelings of anxiety and one of the most important things you can do is remove yourself from that situation, even if it's just for a few minutes to help relax and take a breather. If you are in a situation that is causing you anxiety such as an argument, a situation at work, etc. you need to get away from it if only for a moment. A simple moment to clear your mind can help more than you imagine.
4. Find something else to do
When you're having anxiety, only focusing on your anxiety will make it much worse. You need to find something to do that will keep your mind off of your anxiety and what is causing it. There are many things you can do to take yourself away from anxious situation such as grabbing your iPod or MP3 player and listening to a song that will help you relax and will help you focus on feeling better. Maybe grab a book you are reading and go outside to read a few pages to help lose what it is you were focusing so much on that caused you to feel so anxious. You want something to take your mind off of the stress and worries, not something that will make them worse.
5. Keep a Journal
Journaling can help you in many ways, if you journal when you are feeling anxious it can help you to understand what really caused you to feel anxious in the first place which will help you target areas in your life to work on so you don't feel anxious. It can also help you to vent and get all your worries and stresses out of your system so you can feel better. Always keep your journal handy for when anxiety strikes. You can keep it in your purse or in your desk drawer at work. Take a moment to write down exactly how you are feeling. Be sure you remove yourself from distractions so you can focus on your writing. Go outside or in a more quiet room to write in peace and to the full extent. Anxiety can really cause a person to lose the ability to function and think clearly which is never something that you don't want to happen especially if you are at work or at school.
